12A: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior

Interview One: Neil (my father)

According to my father, this need arises when in bed. As an owner of multiple cats and dogs and one who sleeps in the dark, this problem occurs frequently. Whether it’s one of the cats walking along the bedside table, or even himself reaching onto the table to grab a drink in the dark, cups often go flying, creating a mess and sometimes (potentially) harming his belongings, from phones to wallets and watches. Often, he just leaves his drink on a high surface that the animals can’t reach but creates an inconvenience when he wakes up thirsty.

Interview Two: Josh (my roommate)

Josh is the owner of a large dog and likes to party as well. He said that he could use this product all the time. Whether his dog gets too close to the coffee table, or he’s around a rowdy group of friends, the event that his cup gets knocked over and causes an inconvenience isn’t rare. He often blames his dog’s tail for swinging around the low table. The only solutions he claims to find is holding his drink the whole time or finishing it before he takes a seat. This doesn’t allow him to enjoy his drink or his time sitting because he has to constantly guard his drink.

Interview Three: Rachel (my girlfriend)

Rachel likes to party and often gets a little clumsy when she drinks too much. This often results in knocking her cup over around the house or at her bedside table. She said this would be a great solution to the problem and would save her time, the inconvenience, and potentially a lot of money, as her belongings would be safer. She doesn’t believe there’s much else she can do to combat her clumsiness and that this would be a great help in her daily life.

Conclusion: From my research, I learned that this would be a great household item as it helps both dog owners and those who make the honest mistake of accidentally knocking their drink over. This product would save people the inconvenience and time of cleaning, and potentially a lot of money as these accidents often cause serious damage to valuable items.

  1. Max,
From your three interviews I can tell that this is a need that definitley needs to be addressed. As a dog owner myself, I can put myself in the shoes of the dog owners you interviwed because many times our dogs will acccidentally knock over our drinks with their tails or just by geting their face to close to it. It is an inconvenience to alsways be aware of your drink while in a social setting or even at home in bed because it might spill over. Great job!

  2. Sounds like you chose good candidates to interview, as each seems to want the product for different reasons. All of these people fall within your target customer range, and all give you different perspectives for marketing possibilities for the product. I agree it is a good product to combat clumsiness or general unawareness in the dark. I think this is very simple and affordable household item, that could very well exist for dog-owners, outdoorsmen, and clumsy people alike.

  3. Max,

As someone who does not have any inside pets, I can still see the need and desire for your product. As you have said in other posts, some of the people that have expressed an interest in your idea were similar to me in the sense of animals not causing their issues; some caused them for themselves while others had small children in place of dogs. For me, I generally do not knock over cups, but you can never be too sure. Being able to be more confident and less careful around my glass of milk as I eat my cookies at night would definitely be worth it to buy your product! Also, looking forward to the future and the potential of a dog being in my house, I would be in the same position as your roommate and dad. I would want this product, again, as a way to be more confident that my drinks will remain in their cups and not on the floor!

  4. max,

Getting other peoples opinions on your product is the best way to see whether or not it is a good idea. After reading your three interviews I agree that your product works. I hate having spills on my counter or having my cold water condensate and get water all over my table. Since I am not a pet owner the situations you describe with pets knocking down drinks doesn't affect me directly but their are other ways in that spills happen on tables. I think you next step is to elaborate on how exactly it work and maybe even come up with a few more examples of how it is used.
