26A Celebrating Failure

One thing that I’ve failed at this semester is making more time to go to the gym. I planned on getting back into my routine this semester seeing as last time I spent more time partying than focusing on my health. However, school gets increasingly more difficult with each semester, giving me less and less time to do things for me.
Last Fall I would make a point of going at least 4 times a week and kept this routine up the entire semester. My grades were not as good as they are now, but I was in great shape. When Spring came around I just wanted to have a good time. Was it worth it? Yeah, for a semester. But when this Fall came around I told myself I wanted to get back in the shape I was before and tried multiple times to make it a routine. I failed at making it a routine because I found myself concerned with getting my school work done and getting the grades I needed in my classes.
In doing this, I found the importance of prioritizing. Sometimes it makes more sense to worry about some things more than others. Right now, I need to get my school life on track, and I can worry about the other things later. I am not upset with how I’ve been unable to fulfill this personal request, but I am proud of myself for deciding what is more important and sticking to that.

Failure is a learning experience. Things don’t always go the way you want them to when you want them to. Rather, we work towards our goals and end up with the ultimate form, which we try to perfect to our greatest extent. Risk is good, but not when it jeopardizes things that we don’t necessarily get to do again.

  1. Max,
I think it is important that you recognize where you maybe did not fulfill a personal goal BUT you recognize that things happen and school gets busy. As a student athlete who is often more of an athlete-student, prioritizing school over exercising is really important. It is tough to be successful in life without the grades and degree. Prioritizing is really important to establish a routine and making sure you get things done. I'm glad you recognize what is really important as a college student.

  2. Max,

this failure directly relates to me also because I am a big gym person. the reason why I love this failure is because I could say it is a failure for me also. When not at school I am always able to go to the gym everyday of the week and still make time for whatever else I need to do. At school I find it tough to prioritize the gym because there are so many other things that you have to get done during the day such as school work.

  3. dear maxwell,
i thoroughly enjoyed your attempt at getting to the gym more often in the semester. the main reason i enjoyed this so much was because i myself have been trying to get to the gym more this semester. additionally, i very much appreciate that you mention your priorities and are able to deal with schedule conflicts. furthermore, i enjoy how you acknowledge your interest in fulfilling the goal in the future, still staying committed to the goal whether its beyond the due date or not.

  4. Max,
Not working out this fall semester as much as you originally anticipated to is a great example of how sometimes we do have to prirotize with other things weather it be with school or work. Each semester varies depending on course load and how we prioritize our extra carricular activities. I can definitley relate to your situation because I myself have attempted to workout more this semester but unfortunately I have gotten sick many times and haven't been able to as much as I wanted to.
