Assignment 3A: My Entrepreneurship Story

There have been quite a few times in my life that I’ve been exposed to entrepreneurship, whether it was through my own or my family’s endeavors.

In high school, my friend and I co-founded an annual charity event called the Miami Beach Kickoff 4 Cancer. To this day, hundreds of kids gather on an annual basis to participate in a flag-football tournament that aims to fundraise for the Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital cancer research through each participants entry fee. We started the MBK4C in our Junior year of high school, and it has continued to raise thousands of dollars for the hospital each year since.

On another note, my stepfather is the owner of his own wealth management firm outside of Knoxville, TN. He told me that he knew he wanted to work in financial planning before he got to college and followed the necessary path to do so. After years of working with BB&T, my stepfather decided it was time he opened his own wealth management firm, so that he could operate it the way that he believed was best for him and his clients. In a relatively small town in Tennessee, employee-client relationships are important, and constantly maintaining these relationships and providing the best service and management to these clients is vital to both the clients and the business. Although it did take a few years to establish himself, he is now managing over 400 clients and $45M in assets. My stepfather has shown me that hard work does pay off with determination and the commitment to providing the best for your clients.

I enrolled in ENT3003 to learn the basics to becoming an entrepreneur. Not even necessarily to starting a business, but rather how to look at the world in a way where I can recognize the problems that need to be solved. Innovation is key, especially today in a world where technology is growing at a rapid pace and the ability to develop and implement new products and ideas into our society is providing opportunities for those willing to work for it. I would like to be able to open my mind in a manner that allows me to take advantage of these opportunities, and take on my own exciting challenges.

  1. Max,

Interesting story about the Miami Beach Kickoff 4 Cancer fundraiser. That is an awesome way to fundraise money, and definitely a creative way to get people involved. Sounds like you were thinking ahead of your time. Your stepfather's entrepreneurial experience is also very impressive, as financial management is seeming to be the next big thing for our generation as well. Innovation is how our generation is going to make their money, as we are smart, faster, stronger than those who came before us. What are some things you are interested in working with and innovating? Personally, I have an interest in athletic footwear innovation.

    All the best,
    Sophia

  2. Max,

Your charity event is something that I feel deserves to be applauded! I was involved in minor events that involved making donations to a local elementary school when I was in high school, but never anything to the level of your event. Also, the information on your stepfather's past is something that interests me. I am back and forth on the things that I want to do with my career, so on one hand it makes me feel that I do not have my life together knowing he already had his career planned out going into college, but on the other I feel that I have enough of a plan in knowing a general area. Great post!

  3. Max,

Creating your own charity is something that I can relate to. Back for my bar mitzvah I hosted a charity event which was a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. All of my proceeds were donated to St Judes Hospital Another example of a charity event I participate in every year is called Robbies Run. It is a 5k run for one of my friends brothers who suddenly passed away from a heart attack when he was very young. I make sure that every year I spend some time setting up and of course running in lobbies run to remember my friends brother. It great to hear that you and your friends are doing your part to help out the community just like I do at home.
